<p>The true proponent of judo must know a variety of strangles he can use on his opponent. This is one of the best-kept secrets of judo. In this article we will discuss kata-ha-jime (single wing strangle), hadaka-jime (bare-hand strangle) and ryote-jime (two-hand strangle). All these strangles can be very useful againsy your opponent.</p>
<p>1. Kata-ha-jime (single wing strangle)<br />
Kata-ha-jime is a technique used in strangling an opponent from behind. With your left hand, grasp your opponent&#8217;s right collar deeply, using a regular palm-down hold and pressing your forearm against and under his chin. Slide your right forearm under his right arm and carry his arm up and over the nape of his neck while drawing your left hand from the right to the left side to strangle him into submission.</p>
<p>Key points:<br />
a. Keep your posture erect so that you can draw power from your waist and abdominal region.<br />
b. Synchronize the movement of your right arm, which pushes his right arm up and backward, with that of your left hand, which moves horizontally from the right to the left.<br />
c. Pull your opponent&#8217;s body back in order to slant his upper body backward a little to the left. This will cause him to lose the resisting power of his waist and abdominal region.</p>
<p>2. Hadaka-jime (bare-hand strangle)<br />
One of the secrets of judo is that in the techniques of strangulation you press both your opponent&#8217;s windpipe and the carotid arteries on either side of his neck. In hadaka-jime you place your left forearm against the right side of his neck and your left arm across the front of his neck. Your left palm is placed downward on the inner elbow fold of your right arm.</p>
<p>Now bend your right arm backward and place your right palm against the back of your opponent&#8217;s head. Your left arm rests on top of his left shoulder. In the technique of hadaka-jime you apply pressure with the left radius part of your wrist against the front of his neck. Then you push his head forward with the palm of your right hand while you draw your left forearm backward to complete the strangle.</p>
<p>Key points:<br />
a. Keep your posture erect.<br />
b. Break your opponent&#8217;s posture backwards to overcome his defensive power.<br />
c. Your left forearm is drawn back-not pulled around-with the same pressure as that exerted by your right hand in pressing forward.</p>
<p>3.Ryote-jime (two-hand strangle)<br />
You grasp your opponent by both sides of his collar in the front with your hands in the regular hold (hands clenched, thumbs up).The little finger of your left hand is placed on his right carotid, and that of your right hand presses his left carotid.</p>
<p>Now, with both your hands, press both sides of his neck at the same time, twisting your wrists inwards until the palms of both hands are turned upwards. The force applied to his neck is produced with the pressure of the front of your clenched fist or the lower part of your fingers. You can also strangle him from underneath.</p>
<p>Key points:<br />
a. Prevent your opponent&#8217;s use of the defensive power of his abdominal region by pulling him down and forward, thereby breaking his posture. Complete the movement by pressing the weight of your hip region against the side of his neck. When you apply ryote-jime from underneath, you must break his waist posture by kicking his right thigh away with your foot.<br />
b. Turn both your wrists simultaneously until pressure is created against both sides of his neck when the front of the fists of both your hands (palm up) twist into both sides of his neck to complete the strangle.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>construction contractor put the safety of five Polish workers at risk by allowing them to sleep on a site with flammable materials present, a court heard.</p>
<p><!-- ARTICLE TEXT --> Principal contractor, Asaad Al-Helu was undertaking construction work at a site in Hull. The premises contained flammable materials, such as wood and rubbish, and an unsafe electrical system, yet workers were still allowed to smoke and drink on site.</p>
<p>There were no means of escape, or of raising the alarm in the event of a fire. This not only put the men sleeping on site in danger but also posed a potential risk to residents of nearby houses.</p>
<p>On being alerted to the situation at the site by Hull City Council, the HSE investigated the premises in February 2008. Inspector John Rowe immediately served two Prohibition Notices in relation to working at height and the safety of the electrical fixtures, respectively.</p>
<p>Following the inspector’s visit, a fire-safety officer and housing officer from the council investigated the premises and issued a Prohibition Order under the Housing Act 2004, in order to evict and re-house the workers.</p>
<p>Inspector Rowe revisited the site in March 2008 and served a further Prohibition Notice stopping all work, as “there was nobody competent on the site to manage the construction work safely”. Al-Helu had no background in construction and failed to prepare a construction plan before the start of the work. If he had carried out a plan, it should have brought to light the risks from fire, work at height, and site electrics, and enabled safe practices to be used. No work has since been carried out on the site.</p>
<p>Appearing before Hull magistrates on 31 March, Al-Helu pleaded guilty to two offences under s33(1) of the HSWA 1974: a breach of reg. 23(1)(a) of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007, for failing to prepare a construction plan; and a failure to discharge his duty under s3(2) of the HSWA not to expose persons not in his employment to risks to their health and safety.</p>
<p>Al-Helu accepted he had made mistakes but had trusted the workers to do a good job. He also told the court he had fallen on hard times because of the credit crunch. The magistrates said it was fairly obvious that Al-Helu had no competence in construction and told him that if he was to engage in such activity he must fully conversant with the rules and regulations.</p>
<p>He was fined £1000 and ordered to pay costs of £1149.</p>
<p>Inspector Rowe told SHP that this was the first time he had ever come across workers sleeping on site. He said: “These five construction workers were allowed to sleep on the site at night, which exposed them to fatal injuries in the foreseeable event of a fire. One carelessly discarded cigarette could have had serious and possibly fatal consequences, not only for themselves but also for local residents.</p>
<p>“Generally, standards of work and preparation on the site fell far short of the industry norm. The risks were foreseeable and straightforward to avoid.”</p>

<p>Kidneys are super-filters, ridding your body of toxins and turning your blood into high-performance liquid. Unfortunately, we don’t look after them. Too much alcohol and a bad diet stops their good work, resulting in nasty consequences like Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Worst case scenario, CKD can lead to heart attacks and strokes. Not good. Here are five solutions to stop you from killing your kidneys.</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>Drop the pressure</strong><br />
High blood pressure is present in 80 percent of patients with CKD. Nearly one-billion people worldwide have high blood pressure and that number is expected to increase to 1.56 billion by 2025. High blood pressure puts more stress on your kidneys so they can’t filter waste from the blood properly (which eventually leads to CKD). Keep your blood pressure down and you’ll reduce the risk of needing dialysis or experiencing a heart attack or stroke. The best ways to do that? Regular exercise and a balanced diet. Weight loss of as little as four or five kilograms can mean a massive improvement in blood pressure.</li>
<li><strong>Cut the sodium</strong><br />
Men dig biltong. Cheesy pizzas. Slap chips. Unfortunately, your kidneys don’t dig all the salt that comes with these treats. Your kidneys are designed to balance the salt intake naturally occurring in foods, with your body needs. But with the modern processed foods and increased salt levels, our inbuilt filters are working harder than ever. More salt means higher blood pressure and less blood flow to the kidneys, impairing its function and leading to CKD. Try to keep below 1 500mg of sodium a day.</li>
<li><strong>Drink water, not booze</strong><br />
Yes this may sound obvious, but few know the affects of alcohol on the kidney. In simple words, it screws up the balance of nutrients and the way the kidney does its filtering. Ease up on the booze and drink water with all your meals.</li>
<li><strong>Check your genetics</strong><br />
One of the easiest ways of keeping track of your kidney health is to go for regular blood pressure and urine examinations, and also to track your family history. If you have had any relatives with CKD or related diseases, ask your doc for some info. Ask about the dangers of hypertension and learn some self-measurement techniques so you can keep tabs on your own health.</li>
<li><strong>Don’t abuse drugs or supplements</strong><br />
Some over-the-counter medicines can be toxic to your kidneys if taken regularly over a long period of time. Combinations of aspirin, acetaminophen, and other medicines such as ibuprofen are the most dangerous to the kidneys. If you take drugs like these regularly, consult your doctor. If you have diabetes, monitor your blood glucose closely to keep it under control. Watch out for creatine and protein supplements. They place more stress on your kidneys, as the increased protein levels are hard to filter properly. Check with a dietician.</li>

<li>Putting the mouse too far away means that your upper arm is forced away from the body when you use it. Make sure you can use your mouse without stretching and with your elbow comfortably bent.</li>

<li>Shift your position often – at least every 45 minutes, every 20 minutes is even better, but every two minutes is just bloody annoying for the rest of us – and don&#8217;t forget to stretch.</li>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When I watch people babbling about trivia into their mobile phones on trains, buses, in queues and waiting rooms, I wonder whether they do it simply in order to feel connected and un-alone. From what I am forced to overhear, their messages are neither urgent nor meaningful. Perhaps isolation and loneliness, those major problems of modern city life, seem easiest to fend off with electronic devices. But, ironically, people reading text messages on their mobiles while listening to non-stop music, wrapped up with glazed eyes in some virtual reality, look more isolated than the rest of us.</p>
<h2>Loneliness versus Solitude</h2>
<p>Yet there is nothing wrong with being alone. It is part of finally growing up (at any age). Besides, loneliness and solitude are completely different. Loneliness is a sad, scary experience, negative in every respect. On the other hand, occasional voluntary solitude acts as a positive, peaceful refuge from noise and hassle, an instant respite that nourishes our inner life and, oddly enough, protects us from being lonely. The lonely person feels separated from everybody else by a massive invisible wall, even when he or she is among people. Indeed, the worst scenario is to feel lonely when being with a loved person, as if you were not speaking the same language or living on the same planet.</p>
<p>A sense of loneliness often starts early in life, when a child feels &#8216;different&#8217; from the others who promptly pick up the cue and act accordingly, sometimes with the surprising cruelty of small children. Being excluded hurts as much at the age of four as at 40. We are social beings, and at least occasionally, need to be mirrored and reassured by our peers. According to the Canadian psychologist Eric Berne, we all need stroking; without it, symbolically speaking, our spine will wither away. Hence the painful conflict of the lonely individual – on the one hand there is the great longing to be accepted, on the other the fear of being rejected, just like in the past. Normally the fear is the stronger, and the wall of isolation grows a little thicker.</p>
<p>Loneliness, like poverty, doesn&#8217;t come from God, from outer space or from any other external source. Over the years I have been observing how several clients of mine were actually <strong>causing</strong> the loneliness they were complaining about. One of them, a young, attractive flight attendant working at a London airport repeatedly claimed that her colleagues were nice and polite but remote, unwilling to make friends with her. One day, describing her daily routine, she told me that she normally had breakfast in the canteen, where her colleagues always ate together, while she would sit at a small table behind a pillar. In the coach, which took the crew to their next flying job, she also had a favourite seat, a single perch behind the driver. At this stage for an irreverent moment I wondered whether she&#8217;d actually prefer to travel on the aircraft&#8217;s wings, but instead I only asked how she expected anyone to join her on her single seats, and indeed wasn&#8217;t <strong>she</strong> giving the impression of being aloof and unfriendly? This idea amazed her. She even objected to it, but not for long.</p>
<p>Another, more mature client, who enjoyed financial security and had many acquaintances, lived on her own and complained bitterly about not belonging to any group or community. Yes, she did receive invitations – to sing in a choir, to run a reading circle, to join a dance group, but she turned them all down. Why, since she had a good voice and loved reading and dancing? Because she felt sure that behind the invitations there was nothing but pity for her lonely state, and she was too proud to go along with that. Clearly, own goals are not limited to the football field.</p>
<p>These two stories are good examples of the DIY origin of loneliness. Its antidote is the realization that life is a network of countless connections, and that if we acknowledge the shared factors of existence, the atmosphere and temperature of our relationships will immediately improve, for clearly others need stroking as much as we do. At the most basic level we are all born and we all die, and between those two gates of life our paths are pretty similar – we might just as well be linked by what we share, rather than be separated by our differences.</p>
<h2>Solitude at its Best</h2>
<p>Solitude is the positive aspect of being alone. We all need it at times, but many people are afraid of it, afraid of its silence and inactivity, which are so different from the noisy, stressful, driven lifestyle they take for granted. That lifestyle only serves the interests of the consumer society, for it stops us from staying still and pondering life&#8217;s essential values. And, of course, independent thought curbs the appetite for acquisitions. But if we never choose to spend some time alone, how can we observe our inner experiences, or find out who we really are behind our public image, where we are going, or what our life is all about?</p>
<p>Only in solitude can we hear our inner voice, that of instinct and intuition, which is normally wiser and more honest than our everyday perception. That inner voice has the answer to our important questions, and that in turn gives us a sense of independence, for we no longer expect others to hold up a mirror for us and pass judgment on the result. This inner independence even improves our intimate relationships, for we no longer expect – normally in vain – that our partner should make up for all our deficiencies. Above all, we discover how to be alone without feeling in the least bit lonely.</p>
<p>Without solitude there is no creativity. The greatest geniuses – artists, philosophers, inventors, authors – did not produce their masterpieces in company. But you needn&#8217;t be a genius to enjoy the fruits of solitude. All of us are capable of producing at least one masterpiece: the greatest possible flowering and fulfilment of our own life.</p>

People who work long hours are at an increased risk of suffering a decline in their cognitive function.</p>
<p><!-- ARTICLE TEXT -->This close association is revealed<br />
in a major study carried out by the Finnish Institute of Occupational<br />
Health and University College London, and comes ahead of ‘Work Your<br />
Proper Hours Day’ on 27 February.</p>
<p>More than 2200 British civil servants were tested as part of the research, which formed part of the <a href="http://www.shponline.co.uk/article.asp?pagename=archive&amp;article_id=265">Whitehall II study</a>. They took five different cognitive tests in 1997-99, and again in 2002-04. Employees working very long hours (more than 55 hours per week) and those who worked an average of 41-55 hours performed worse in vocabulary and cognitive-reasoning tests, compared with employees who worked normal working hours (35-40 hours).</p>
<p>Employees with long working hours also slept for shorter periods, reported more symptoms of depression, and consumed more alcohol than those with normal working hours.</p>
<p>It is not, however, known why long working hours seem to have an adverse effect on cognitive function. According to the Institute, several factors may contribute to the process, including sleeping problems, depression, unhealthy lifestyle, and cardiovascular diseases.</p>
<p>The Institute’s professor, Mika Kivimaki, commented: “We will go on with this study question in the future. It is particularly important to examine whether the effects are long-lasting and whether long working hours predict more serious conditions, such as dementia.”</p>
<p>The TUC accepts that the recession will encourage many workers across the country to do all they can – including working beyond their contracted hours – to keep their employers afloat and their jobs secure. But it still intends to celebrate Work Your Proper Hours Day on Friday to get the message across that working excessive hours can be harmful to health.</p>
<p>General secretary, Brendan Barber, told SHP: “This week the TUC is marking Work Your Proper Hours Day by showing that, once again, 5 million workers in the UK are giving their employers seven hours and six minutes of their time for free in unpaid overtime each week. Workers should be applauded for wanting to help their employers out in a downturn but when the economy gets back on its feet, employers must be careful to limit the effect of the long-hours’ culture on their workplaces.”</p>

<p>Provincial and ex-South African Universities surfer, Jazz Kuschke, puts the revolutionary Firewire surfboard from Australian shaper, Nev Hyman, through its paces</p>
<p>What is it? A board made from a combination of epoxy composites and an expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam core that has balsa-wood rails rather than a stringer (a thin piece of wood running from nose to tail that increases the strength of the board), like a conventional fibreglass board. The history of using balsa as a material for surfboard making, goes back to the Hawaiians but really took off in the late Thirties. The advantage of balsa wood is that it’s light and strong, making surfboards more buoyant and therefore easier to handle.</p>
<p>Why all the fuss? The Firewire ticks all three magic, surf-tech boxes:</p>
<p><span style="color:brown;"><strong>1. LIGHTER:</strong></span><br />
It may sound like space-science, but the numbers don’t lie: unlike regular polyurethane cores, which weigh can weigh up to 1.5kg per cubic foot, Firewire’s cores are built from 500g EPS foam. To stabilise the core and increase strength a three-millimetre layer of high-density aerospace composite is then added through a vacuum process. This leaves you with a wave-riding machine that’s lighter than most boards you’re likely to buy off a surf shop shelf. That being said, a (conventional) custom-shaped, competition-specific board glassed (outer cloth on the top and bottom of the board) with four-once cloth will probably weigh about the same. The trade-off comes in the durability.</p>
<p><span style="color:brown;"><strong>2. STRONGER:</strong> </span><br />
Conventional boards are notoriously weak – take a big wave on the head or hit a sand bank at the wrong angle and you’re back on the beach with half a board in each hand. A Firewire can take just about everything the ocean and rider can throw at it. Rumour has it that top World Tour professional Taj Burrow goes through one Firewire in the same time he used to go through 20 “normal” boards. To me that says a lot &#8211; pros demand a lot from their equipment.</p>
<p><span style="color:brown;"><strong>3. FASTER:</strong> </span><br />
It’s the hardest one of the three to measure truly objectively, but in practical surfing terms it’s probably the easiest – surfers are all about how boards “feel”. And the Taj model flies. As proof – there hasn’t been a lot of swell around Cape Town for the past couple of weeks, so I’ve been riding it in tiny West Coast slop and generating the most speed I’ve ever been able to on such powerless waves.</p>
<p><strong>What about the drawbacks?</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>The price &#8211; R6 500 (for the Taj model) is pretty steep.</li>
<li> No custom shapes yet &#8211; you have to choose from a pre-determined model. (If the mass production thing worries you, know that top South African surfer, Sean Holmes, swears by his.)</li>
<li> It may be too strong. In my opinion, one of the coolest things about surfing is ordering and getting a new custom-shaped board. With Firewire, you’ll probably need to buy only one board every five years or so.</li>
